Web design is a serious business, and a lot of thought and planning is required. There is no point throwing a lot of money at software, development and research time, if the site does not reach its target users, either through under-promotion, or a poor design which has users leaving faster than you can load the page.

It is generally recognised these days that most users want a fast downloading site, but with more bandwidth slowly being made available, there is a desire for some aesthetic element to web sites. I am still in the process of learning further web design and development techniques, although my area of speciality is the initial research and brainstorming which goes into developing the layout of a site.
